1. Stipa tenuissima

One of the best grasses for your winter planting palette, this plant is best known for being evergreen and it’s movement in the slightest of breezes. It can grow up to 60cm in height and is best planted in groups of 5 – 7 per meter to achieve the desired effect.

2. Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’

Forming mounds of lush green foliage and growing up to 1.8m this grass is extremely architectural, and even though it is deciduous it is used in planting schemes for the winter silhouettes when frost hits the garden.

3. Anementhele lessoniana

Large clumps of arching foliage that features tints of orange, red and yellow this ornamental, evergreen grass can grow up to 90cm tall. To be planted in groups of 1 – 3 per meter this grass is excellent for dry conditions in sun or shade.

4. Deschampsia cespitosa

Growing up to 1.2m, the UK native forms exceptionally neat mounds of dark, lush green foliage that will be obscured in the summer months by cloud like flowers. In the winter, like the Calamagrostis, this plant also excels by producing stunning winter silhouettes throughout the garden.

5. Sporobolus heterolepis

To be planted in groups of 3 – 5 per meter this plant is a graceful and slow growing deciduous grass. The durable species produces lush mounds of green foliage and is topped with airy flowering heads. Growing up to 90cm, during the winter months the entire plant turns golden with orange under tones.
